Looks like once Ollie has found a home, Tyla's situation is resolved, and finances get back on track, we might have another project waiting in the wings.  While we have permission to be on the land from the gentleman who owns the land feeds this mare, we have yet to be able to establish contact with the actual owner.

Hard to see much in the pictures, I know, but the cell phone was all I had at the moment.  She's not starving, but she could definitely use quite a few pounds and a good, slow worming.  She's also rubbed her face raw in spots from the flies.  She wears a neckrope that she's had on for who-knows-how-many years.  Her 'pasture' is scarcely the size of my corral; mostly weeds, rocks, trees, ditches, and a truck.

This is the sorry excuse she has for a shelter.  Yes, the roof has fallen in; and yes, that IS a creek running through the middle of it.  The far right corner is where she stands, and the creek is her drinking water.  I stepped in and removed the boards on the ground that had exposed nails.

How she stays in this pen I'll never understand.  This is her feed bucket; the fence has been pushed down to the level of the top of the bucket (under knee-high), yet she never steps over.

I've gotten close to this girl and I don't think it would take much time to get a halter on her and teach her some ground manners in order to bring her to the farm and find her a proper home, although details and logistics will have to be worked out first.  In the meantime, I would like to get a roof on her shelter and get some real feed and feed-thru wormer to the guy who feeds her, and a load of fill dirt or tiny creek rock to re-route the creek out of her stall.  If you would like to help, please email me at firebird96ta@peoplepc.com

I got to take the new shop toy, a 2007 Corvette Z06, to an autocross in Lawrenceville, IL on Saturday.  Words cannot describe...but maybe pictures can :).  More on the Auto/Work page.

Busy Weekend 07/13/2009

Kind of boring, but still busy :).  And as usual, the camera is at the ready...

Picture
A beautiful sunset Sunday evening.  Had been raining all day and started to clear up just as night was coming on.

Spectacular colors...

Saturday night we had a weenie roast with the neighbors and allowed Nathan and Gabe to indulge their inner pyromaniacs :).

The kittens are growing like weeds; this is Smudge, he of the seagreen eyes.  A rather photogenic little monster. :)

Again, Mr. Smudge...

One of my flights last week actually had windows clear enough to get some good shots through...

More clouds, over Tennessee somewhere...

A cloudless moment.  Love how up there, everything is blue...

Our friend Allie will be leaving on vacation for a few weeks so we got her a couple good rides in beforehand.  She loves Joe like crazy and he clearly loves her too.  Here are a few shots of the two amigos:

This weekend was HOT, but I got out for a few shots of the sweaty boys.  Everybody got baths Saturday afternoon and wouldn't you know it, 4 hours later it's thunderstorming.  Yay.  But it cooled things off for a few minutes, anyway.  Now back to your regularly scheduled heat wave...

The Next Step? 06/17/2009

After hearing from at least one person that they would love to donate to a future rescue/rehome project horse IF ONLY the donation were tax deductible, we have decided to start looking into filing for 501(c)3 status.  I don't know if it would be worth the trouble, but it won't hurt to check into.  Also looking into possibly partnering with a larger, already-tax-exempt rescue but haven't heard back yet.  Anyone with any advice pertaining to the filing, please contact me!  Thank you!

Kittens!!! 06/12/2009

Picture

Allie recently brought us two tiny kittens that are SO adorable.  I had told her how I'd always wanted a white cat, and little more than a week later, her cat revealed two white kittens!  (They are about 7 weeks old, but had been hidden...)  She brought them over and we made them a home in the bathroom; we ended up bringing momma in, too; at least until we're sure they're old enough to wean.  We thought it was a boy and a girl so we named them Sophie and Smudge, but it turns out Sophie may be a boy, too!  More pics of these cute fluff-balls to come.

We started out calling her 'Lily' but after getting to know her, we decided that 'Tyla' suits her better.  Her page is the bottom right tab at the top of your screen; check it out!

Some of the woven wire around here is run-down (and I dont like the looks of wire, anyway), so we decided to start replacing the whole perimeter with 5' 3-rail wooden fencing.  We'll probably only be able to do sections at a time but it's going to look great, be strong and safe, and last a long time when we're finished.  Nathan's been getting the poles that the electric company across the street takes down and getting some lumber from work.  He got the first 200' done this weekend (along with a pretty bad sunburn in the process, but that's what he gets for not listening to me when I tell him to GET A SHIRT OR GET SOME SUNSCREEN, lol!).  We still have to run the hot tape across it in order to power the next section and we haven't opened it up yet to let the horses next to it, but that should happen this week.  We've also got to paint it (black/creosote/treatment) once the lumber cures a little more.  Whaddya think so far?

BEES!!! 05/29/2009

Picture
A few days ago we noticed something hanging in a bush behind the house; after getting closer, we see it's a huge knot of BEES!  Fortunately they were honeybees and not agressive.  They had formed a mass about the size of a basketball and it was fairly difficult to restrain the urge to poke it and see what happens, :).  They hung out until the next afternoon and then were gone.  Also found a cute little tree frog underneath the bush the same day; how cool is that?
