Justin's Story, Page 4
Foot Update
Justin got another trim today and I'm so pleased with his progress. He's got nice, solid wall all the way around; the abcess spot is finally almost gone, and the weird crack that appeared in the last couple months doesn't seem to be getting any worse. It doesn't seem to go very deep; just a split in the outer layer of hoof wall. Regardless, they look great and he behaved like a trooper, even though Shiloh was hollering his fool head off (Lucky had just left to go to his new home). Here's some pics below; click to enlarge.
Two Firsts
Justin had two "first" experiences this weekend. Saturday night, we took him out by himself and hauled him out to the forest for his first time away from home; he didn't know what to do, so he just decided to holler at every horse he saw. And Sunday afternoon, we took the other two, so Justin got to spend his first time alone at home. He didn't seem to mind; when we returned, we found him in pretty much the exact position as when we left; contentedly munching on his pile of hay. He's getting a GOOD winter coat in this year, and I've started putting a little loose minerals in the boys' feed which he LOVES. He even finishes his and goes looking in everyone else's buckets to see if they left any. I got a feeder to put some in to leave out for him, but the cats seem to think it's a litterbox, so I'll have to get one of the ones that hangs on the fence to keep the cats out of it. Anyway, he's really changed a lot since Tanner and Lucky are gone; getting a little more assertive, but that could be because he's growing and will be as tall as Tard soon. :)
Justin's trip to the Forest, #2
Sunday dawned warm and wonderful, so we loaded Baby in the trailer while we've still got it and took him back to the Forest. He was a little quieter this time, but still quite a bit of hollering going on. He got to sniff all kinds of new stuff like picnic tables and fire pits, got to stand tied for awhile, got to walk down the trail, and got to watch a couple dozen horses walk past. He's very well-behaved, other than the neighing. Nothing seems to frighten him. Here are some more shots of his time out.
Just a quick one...
Anytime you get a reasonably warm day in winter, you simply must take advantage of it by napping in the sun on a pillow of hay.
Frosty Winter Morning
Justin takes a break from grazing on this cold December morning to pose for the camera. :)
